Broadcasting regulator Ofcom has awarded Scottish media group STV licences to run digital terrestrial television (DTT) channels in Glasgow and Edinburgh for up to 12 years.
STV teamed up with Edinburgh Napier University and Glasgow Caledonian University to launch its bid to create Edinburgh TV (ETV) and Glasgow TV (GTV) in August, and said it was “delighted” to have secured the two licences.
The media group said: “GTV and ETV will provide an innovative television service to the communities they serve, complementing STV’s existing broadcast, online and mobile services.
“These new ventures will also provide media students with opportunities to work and learn in a live broadcast environment.”
Ofcom has now handed out 13 local television licences, having invited applications covering 21 areas last year, and said it will make further awards over the coming months.
It added: “As well as broadcasting on DTT, it is anticipated that local TV channels might also wish to offer their services on satellite, cable and online.”
