Business news in brief: £175m plan for DPD to deliver

Parcel delivery company DPD said yesterday it would create up to 1,500 jobs as it invests £175 million on expansion.

The firm, a subsidiary of France’s La Poste, is proposing a new £100m sorting hub in the East Midlands and will build ten additional depots over the next 15 months as it looks to meet growing demand for its service from online retailers. It will also upgrade its existing network.

G4S growth belies Olympic fiasco

G4S began to put its Olympics fiasco behind it yesterday as it revealed that sales growth had accelerated in the third quarter.

The group, which suffered reputational damage when it failed to provide all of its 10,400 contracted guards for the Games, said revenues excluding the London 2012 contract rose 6.3 per cent in the nine months to September, up from 5.8 per cent in the first half of the year.

Gyllenhammar ups Superglass stake

ACTIVIST investor Peter Gyllenhammar has nearly doubled his stake in Stirling-based insulation maker Superglass to 14.7 per cent.

A regular dabbler in small caps, Gyllenhammar recently got his fingers burnt when cashmere firm Dawson International went into administration. Shares in Superglass rose 2.1 per cent to 4.97p.
