British construction output suffered a further fall in August, official data yesterday revealed, though analysts cautioned against reading too much into the figures.

Output slid 11.6 per cent on the year in August, according to the non-seasonably adjusted data from the Office for National Statistics. Compared to July, construction dipped 0.9 per cent after a 2.1 per cent rise in July. Between June and August construction output dropped 11.9 per cent compared to the same three months in 2011.

The ONS warned that caution should be taken when interpreting movements in output involving June because a May public holiday was postponed until then, when another day was added to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.
