Hensol’s treasures up for sale

A ROMAN table support in the shape of a lion, a rare book of Himalayan plants and a misty Shetland landscape painted by a prominent artist are among the treasures to be auctioned from the home of a big game hunter from Castle Douglas.

Bonhams in Edinburgh is to sell the contents of Hensol, a country house which was previously the home of Dick Cunninhame, an early 20th century adventurer who accompanied President Roosevelt and George IV on trips to Africa.

Miranda Grant, managing director of Bonhams said: “Hensol is a treasure trove. It has a fantastic history and wonderful objects reflecting the different tastes and interests of its occupants and giving a real sense of how life was lived in a large country house over the past 200 years.

“It’s an honour to be entrusted with this sale.”

Hensol is being sold following the death of Lady Henderson.
