English law firm merger partner for Biggart Baillie

The recent run of consolidation in Scotland’s legal sector continued yesterday when Biggart Baillie announced plans to merge with English business law firm DWF, writes Gareth Mackie.

The deal, which takes effect next month, follows this week’s takeover of Edinburgh-based McKay Norwell by Dundee firm Blackadders, the tie-up between Glasgow-based McGrigors and Pinsent Masons and last month’s merger of Lindsays with Shield & Kyd.

Alasdair Peacock, managing partner at Biggart Baillie, said: “These are exciting times in a changing legal market. Competition is fierce and this merger will enhance our ability to continue to compete at the top end of the market on quality and sector expertise.”

The merged business will operate under the DWF Biggart Baillie brand in Scotland and DWF elsewhere. A spokesman said no jobs would be lost. Biggart Baillie, which has offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow, employs around 220, while DWF’s headcount is 1,500.

Andrew Leaitherland, managing partner at DWF, said: “We have ambitious growth plans and are always looking for ways to enhance our offering for clients and strengthen our UK-wide presence. Similarly, Biggart Baillie was keen to continue to expand and provide increased services for its growing client base outside of Scotland.”

The deal marks the third merger in six months for DWF, which saw its turnover rise 24 per cent to £102 million last year.
