SCOTLAND’S life sciences sector has punched above its weight by grabbing a share of £5.3 million from the Technology Strategy Board and the Research Councils.

Ingenza has won funding for three of its research projects, while fellow Edinburgh-based company Sympromics has also secured backing. A total of 15 projects throughout the UK will receive cash.

The latest money will fund “synthetic biology” projects, which use techniques from the engineering sector to create materials and processes for the chemicals, energy and medical industries.

Scott Johnstone, chief executive of the Scottish Lifesciences Association trade body, said: “This is great news for Scottish life sciences.”
