Beware the rise of the ‘mankle’

ONLY last week Debenhams reported the death of the low-slung trouser – bringing joy to all those who did not relish the sight of unclad male buttocks lurching along the street.

However, the fashion retailer now brings reports of another sartorial outrage – reporting a 20 per cent rise in sales of half-mast trousers.

It seems men in the UK have been seized by a craze for leaving their lower legs exposed to the elements in a development the retailer is calling “the rise of the mankle”.

Said Debenhams director of menswear buying Paul Baldwin: “The tailors of Saville Row must be having a fit. For years, they have taken great pride in measuring men’s trousers so that the hem skilfully kisses the front of the shoe, and hangs gracefully down the back.”

“But now, ankle-swingers are the name of the game. ”
