Scottish farming leaders moved quickly yesterday to distance beef production in this country from the discovery of horse meat in burgers
NFU Scotland president Nigel Miller described the situation as a scandal which was frustrating for farmers in Scotland who believed their hard work and reputation for quality was being undermined by the potential illegality in some supply chains and wildly inaccurate labelling of processed products. Both of which were, he claimed, generating mistrust within the food supply chain.
“The Scotch label means the animal has been born, bred, reared, slaughtered and processed in Scotland with every step of the chain subject to assurance and audit.”
He added that every pack of Scotch meat carried codes that could trace it back through the chain to the farm where it originated. “Farmers in Scotland and throughout the UK comply with robust identification and traceability measures.”
