Gadget recycling specialist Redeem has secured a three-year contract from Israel’s first mobile phone network operator to help prevent old handsets being sent to landfill.
The Bathgate-based firm said the deal with Pelephone, which coincided with the launch of the iPhone 5 in Israel, will initially involve the recycling of Apple and Samsung phones sold through the group’s stores.
Chief executive Claes Svensson said: “Israel is an extremely dynamic market with one of the highest penetration of smartphones in the world.
“We are leveraging the value in customers’ old technology to help our partners sell new devices and retain customers by making it affordable to trade up.”
Svensson said 95 per cent of the phones recycled by Redeem are sold on once the firm has wiped the data and checked they are not stolen.
