THE number of Scots forced to claim on their home insurance over the festive season fell sharply compared to recent years, despite widespread flooding before Christmas.

Insurers reported a surge of claims on buildings and contents insurance over Christmas and Hogmanay in both 2010 and 2011, as Scotland was hit by ice, snow and stormy weather. Fewer people north of the Border had to dig out their policies in December and early January as the mild conditions kept damage to a minimum.

Just 85 Scots claimed on their home insurance with the AA between 1 December and 14 January, compared with 1,613 over the same period last year. Of those claims, 43 related to storm damage, down from 1,567 in 2011-12.
