Drivers urged to prepare for winter conditions

WITH winter weather and dark nights, it is vitally important to keep cars well maintained and ready for cold and ice.

However, British motorists have a careless attitude towards winter conditions, according to new research from Asda Money. A survey of drivers found six out of ten British motorists don’t bother getting an extra service before braving freezing weather.

Only 30 per cent of drivers check the level of anti-freeze, almost half (47 per cent) say they never check their oil and lights and less than one in five (17 per cent) check tyre pressure.

Kirsty Ward, head of Asda Money, says: “Winter has well and truly set in now. While the freezing weather has lifted a bit, temperatures are still low. And with storms and rain potentially on the way, the nation’s drivers need to make sure they’ve made all the checks necessary and stocked their cars up for those long journeys.

“Sometimes it feels like there isn’t the time to do this, but driving during the winter months can be dangerous and by simply taking a few minutes to prepare your car, you might be able to avoid a potential accident or breakdown this winter.”

She said the roads were likely to be crowded during the festive period and with difficult driving conditions thrown in, extra care was needed. “It is important to make sure you have breakdown cover in place to deal with any problems that the winter might throw at you.”
