A GENERATION of ambitious young entrepreneurs is emerging from the credit crunch driven more by a desire to work for themselves than money, according to research out today.

A report to mark the 30th anniversary of the Shell LiveWire initiative found that around 253,000 start-up companies have joined the ranks of the UK’s 4.6 million private sector businesses over the past 12 months.

Only 15 per cent of those questioned said they were motivated by money and 83 per cent believed the success or failure of their business would be down to them rather than the wider economy.

Graham van’t Hoff, chairman of Shell UK, said the ‘“can do” generation of entrepreneurs would be critical for economic growth for the country.
